The March of Time

May 14th, 2009 by bCar

Today is my dad’s birthday, and I’ve been reflecting on what it means to me that he is getting older.  He was always older than my friends’ dads, because he was 36 when I was born, and now thee age is showing more than I’d like.

For instance, my dad has gained weight steadily throughout the last decade or so, and although his cholesterol is sky-high he refuses to take anything for it.  My mom has recently switched to a vegetarian diet, and I think that influences his health in a positive way, but he still ought to eat better and exercise more than he does now.

I wonder what will happen to my parents when they get older.  They strike me as too cheap to ever pay for home care or a nursing home if they are able to make that decision, and I’d hate to see them in a state facility.  I’m not sure if I’m up to taking care of them at home, either, though.  I would have to get some family caregiver training because otherwise I don’t think I would know what I was doing — working in child care may be similar in some ways, but it’s still a far cry from taking care of an aging adult!
