Be the Best at Whatever You Do

When I was a kid, my grandfather always told a story of what his father (a lawyer and a self-made man) told him about choosing a career: “I don’t care if you decide to be a shoe-shine boy, but you be the best shoe-shine boy.”

In other words, no matter what you decide to do with your career, just make sure you do it well.

Unfortunately, I think many people forget that what you do isn’t as important as how you do it. For instance, many highly educated people look down their nose at vocational school and career training, and ignore the very real accomplishments of the people who start careers this way.

For instance, golf colleges may not seem like “real” colleges to some people, but would you think differently if you knew that many students who attend these programs later pursue careers in golf business management? What if you knew that someone trained in golf instruction can make a good living as a private instructor and the owner of their own business?

It’s not really about what your degree is, what school you went to, or how much you spent on it. It’s more about how you use your education — and how you perform in your career.

Whatever school you attend, whatever career you pursue, just be the best at whatever you do.

Getting Closer to My Dreams

When I recently told my friends and family that I was interested in some high quality culinary training at one of the different Culinary arts institutes that are out there I told them I did not really know how to go about choosing which school I should pick to attend. No one really knew how to help me at first so they began asking around for me to see if anyone knew anyone else who might be able to give me some suggestions. I did not just want to give up my hard earned money to just any old school, I really wanted to find a good high quality one because I wanted to learn the art the very best I possibly could.

Eventually someone told me about a place called Culinard and suggested that maybe I should try checking into their programs and see if I might find a match for all the things I was wanting to get out of the program with them. I told them I would definitely look into it as soon as possible. Of course then the holidays came up and one thing led to another and I have not had a chance yet to look further into it. But I will soon.

Careers in Nursing

Thanks to a severe nursing shortage in the United States, if you are interested in going into nursing you will find a wealth of careers available to you, as well as the promise of extremely good pay.

When most people think of nurses, they think of the long hours registered nurses (RNs) work in the hospitals. In fact, this is only a small part of the field. Other careers in nursing include:

Home care providers: Special caregiver training programs and elder abuse resources prepare nurses for positions caring for the ill and infirm in their own homes. Companion homemaker training is often less involved than the training programs required for RNs, and is therefore an economical choice if you don’t have the money for an extensive training program right now.
Medical assistants in doctor’s offices: You know how when you go to the doctor, a nurse checks all your vitals and goes over the reason for the visit with you before the actual doctor comes in? Well, that’s another career option for those who are interested in nursing.
Nursing homes: Working as a nurse in a nursing home is a demanding job, both emotionally and physically. However, I have heard from friends that it is also a very rewarding job.

There are, of course, many more specialized positions in the nursing industry — these are just some of the most general positions you might consider. It’s worth looking into, especially since the average salary for an RN is $60,000 annually — one of the highest salaries for a job that requires only a two-year degree!

Planning for Retirement So I am Returning to School

My husband and I did everything by the book. We both worked hard in the traditional sense, he worked in law and I raised the kids. After 30+ years with the same company he retired with a nice retirement package. I never bothered getting so much as an associate degree because my main job was to raise the kids. Although, now after the aggressive investments we made to retire early have failed we find ourselves in an unplanned situation. I will either have to go to work to help save for a while, or our retirement will be put off by approximately 15 years by our estimation.

I have decided to complete a degree and acquire an accredited associates degree in paralegal studies. Even though I am not excited about the reasons I am returning to school I am still excited to learn. I feel like I am finally completing something that I will have total ownership of, my education. I have even talked about continuing on with a ba degree after completion of the program.

In addition, I think it will be fun to work in the same office as my husband for a while. More than likely, we will not get to work on the same cases, but I look forward to seeing him more often then I did when he was in the middle of his career.

An Online Program in Advanced Occupational Therapy

My father fell and hurt his back doing construction work when he was in his forties and became disabled. Since he was unable to work after that, my mother had to become the breadwinner. That was difficult for the whole family, because her salary wasn’t as high as my father’s. His personality changed after his injury, and not for the better. His health worsened too. What happened to my father was what made me decide to become an occupational therapist. I didn’t want other people to go through what he did. It was hard on everyone.

I work in rehabilitation at a local hospital and find it very rewarding. The objective of occupational therapy is to enable disabled people to better their skills. Many of them struggle with depression and they can make tremendous strides if they can improve their physical abilities. Well, since I’m interested in helping people improve their skills, I should improve my skills as an occupational therapist so I can do a better job helping my clients. There’s a school in Arizona that has courses in Master of Science Health Science Programs, Human Movement Online, and Advanced Occupational Therapy Online, the program I want to take. I’ll be able to stay at work while I take classes.

Nurse Looking for Online Masters Degree

I’ve been working as a hospital nurse for five years, but my salary would be higher if I had a master’s degree. We have two young children and want to buy a bigger house. It never hurts to have extra money, since everything costs more nowadays.

I knew there were online colleges with flexible schedules that offered online nursing degrees, but I wanted to make sure they were accredited schools which would accept transfer credits for the few extra nursing courses I had taken after graduating. It didn’t take me long to find what I was looking for. I also found that just because it’s an online program doesn’t mean I don’t have to work hard. My instructors expect a great deal from us, and I’m learning a lot. One of the perks of being in school while working full-time is that my husband has to help out more at home. He’s actually turned out to be a pretty good cook. We’re both learning to be much more organized - the kids too. I tell them they should be grateful we didn’t have to move anywhere, or else it wouldn’t have been possible for me to go back to school.

Dare to Dream - then Dare to Do!

Many people think that choosing a college major and getting a job is something that requires a lot of thought. While it’s true that you should think through this type of big decision, it is also important to realize that you really need to follow your heart when it comes to figuring out what you want to do for the rest of your life.

Many people are afraid to dream big when it comes to their careers. Say that you want a pro golf career. Do you start looking at golf colleges to try to go for this big dream? Or do you tell yourself that you’re never going to make it as a professional golfer and then just give up? Most people in this position wouldn’t even bother looking into golf schools because they would talk themselves out of going for this type of goal.

You should never tell yourself that you can’t do what you want to do. Try it. If you fail then at least you’ll know that you went for it. In the end, you are always going to be more unhappy about those things that you didn’t even dare to try than you are about anything you tried and failed at.

Just Read an Interesting Article about Online College

If you’re addicted to the internet like I am, you read plenty of interesting articles. Every day, I spend hours reading online newspapers and blogs. I’ve learned quite a bit by doing this.

Today, I read an interesting article about online colleges. According to this piece, the enrollment in these online training facilities has increased significantly lately. It seems college marketing and enrollment services have been highly effective in convincing students to forego attending a traditional college.

The article says that these students are using a degree finding resource to find the school that best matches their needs. As our society is getting busier by the day, these pupils need to find a school that fits within their busy schedule of work and family commitments.

What surprised me was the amount of opportunities these online training programs offer. You can get everything from a bachelor degree health sciences to an online masters business administration. What use to cost up tens of thousands of dollars to achieve can now be had at an affordable cost in a convenient setting.

If I could do it all over, I’d definitely consider attending an online college. What do you think?

Diverse Chefs in California

There are some people who believe that all chefs are more or less the same. Those people would be shocked if they attended just one class at the California Culinary Academy. The culinary arts programs in CA draw a particularly diverse crowd of budding chefs that really exemplify the fact that each cook is different from the others despite the fact that they all work in the same industry.

There is a big push in the California dining industry for chefs to take an interest in cooking with locally-grown foods. You will find that a lot of new chefs in the state are interested in this. But the way that they approach it differs greatly from chef to chef. Some work specifically with certain organic farms. Others choose to focus on designing menus that are based around foods natural to California. And still others start their own gardens and use the food from the gardens in their cooking!

This type of diverse approach to some of the same basic principles can be seen throughout the California cooking scene. Chefs working at the professional level will embody this same type of variety. However, it is the students of California’s culinary schools that are really on the cusp of doing something unique and different when it comes to the approach they take to their emerging careers.
