The Education / Career Cycle

April 22nd, 2008 by Best

Students who are just starting out in college often have a career goal in mind. They are going to school specifically to get a degree that will allow them to end up in that career. As time goes on, most students realize that their education is not only a means to an end. The smart individual will always engage in a continuing education / work cycle which allows regular goal-setting and the achievement of constantly changing goals.

The student does initially enter college to gain the skills necessary for a particular career. After starting that career, he often realizes that he would’ve done much better in school after he’d gained some of the on-the-job experience which he now has. This frequently compels him to return to school to get a second degree - either in another field or at an advanced level in the same field. The work experience he has assists him in getting more out of the education the second time around.

In turn, the new degree will allow him to go forward with his career in new ways. Even after obtaining a final degree, the smart individual will continue to take classes and educate himself in his field of study. Each new bit of this education will assist him in improving his work. Each year that passes in the career will allow him to gain a better understanding of the new things that he learns. Students are not designed to be stagnant; education is an ongoing, dynamic experience!
