I’ve Now Heard It All

March 17th, 2009 by Career seeker

I think that I have officially heard it all now.  The other day, a friend of mine was telling me that you can get a golf associate degree.  I didn’t know this, but there are apparently golf colleges that people can attend in order to study for a career in golf.

I would have never guessed that you could go to a school specifically for that.  I know that people can train to be better golfers, but for other golf related career, I just assumed that a normal college degree would suffice.  Going to college for golf, other than to play golf on a collegiate team, just never came to my mind as a career option for people.

Of course, it does make sense that there are schools out there to prepare people for the golf industry.  At the same time, I don’t know how many people could really take a degree in golf seriously.  Granted, I think it might be a lot of fun.  Instead of skipping class to go play golf, you could just go to your next class and get credit for playing golf.

I do realize that the school is a little more serious than that.  I know there are many different types of lucrative careers outside physically playing golf.  A school like this would be great for preparing students for a golf career.  I just wonder if the teachers hold up a “quiet please” sign when they begin class.

Haha, or maybe they have little stands behind each student that scores their correct answers? I think this sounds like a blast–I’m a big supporter of alternative careers, especially because as a novelist, people told me I would never make money and should be a lawyer instead. Go golf!

I wonder what the comparison of men to women would be in these courses. When I was in high school I knew a lot of girls that got hefty scholarships as women golfers because it isn’t as popular, so I wonder if the gender divide would apply to schools.

Best career ever! I would give my right eye tooth to be a professional on a golf course. It just sounds so healing to be out in the sun every day, the soft “thunk” of the golf ball hitting the club floating into your consciousness…it sounds absolutely wonderful. Where are these academies?

I don’t know why you would take a degree in discrete maths more seriously than you would a degree in golf. Why, because it was obviously less fun to learn? What exactly is the merit in boredom and the sacrifice of personal happiness. That attitude represents everything wrong with America.

I think schools and degrees like the ones you’re discussing could actually stand to offer a lot more serious credit to the game of golf. In my experience, it’s unbelievably technical and difficult to master, while just about anyone can pick it up. Kind of like English Literature.

As a golf pro, I can definitely say that these schools are a serious business and a significant investment for the student. The world of golf is vast and complicated, from course maintenance to player management to business to technique. It is no coincidence that it is the game that all power players of business enjoy.

As a student, I’ve been wondering how to tell my parents that I don’t want to go to a traditional school; they’ve saved the money, but I’m not interested in that education. I want something more specific to what I’m interested in, like golf or sports medicine. I would love to know more information about these places; thank you!
