Swimming Classes Reflect Parenting Styles Today

April 24th, 2009 by Best

Think back to when you first learned how to swim. Were you taught by someone how to do it? Did you take swimming classes at a local pool? Most likely, you were actually just allowed near a pool or some other body of water and given the chance to learn how to swim on your own. In some cases, a parent might even have thrown you in the water to teach you how to swim!

That’s not the case anymore. Do a quick search for swimming classes in Miami and you will see that there are dozens of swimming schools in Miami that are offering hundreds of Miami swimming lessons this summer. That’s because parents today approach swimming with the attitude that this is something that kids need to be taught and can’t just learn on their own.

This reflects a general trend towards increasing safety awareness among parents. Parents today would never let their kids ride in the back of a pickup truck or even ride in the car without a seatbelt even though these are things that many of us did as kids. Swimming lessons are just another example of how society has educated parents to take better care of their kids than they may have done in days past.

The Chef Is In

April 21st, 2009 by Career seeker

People pursuing higher education today have so many options. We are bombarded with advertisements for colleges, universities, online distance learning centers and institutes offering higher learning coursework and programs. If you have the desire to go back to school or take classes, the number of options to choose from is dizzying.

After career counseling and advising, I decided to go back to school to be a chef. With a passion for food and past experience working in restaurants, it was a natural choice for my future. I got the education necessary to become a chef by attending culinary arts institutes. I visited several chef schools and choose a program highly regarded for head chefs. There, I perfected my trade and learned the cooking secrets of top chefs who acted as teachers.

My interest in culinary arts stemmed from watching my grandmother in the kitchen. The smell of certain foods cooking can conjure up an image in my mind of her manning the stove. With the precision of a military general, my grandmother went to the grocery daily to purchase fresh ingredients to cook for her family. Now that I am a chef, I can cook for her and she can enjoy my creations.
