Think back to when you first learned how to swim. Were you taught by someone how to do it? Did you take swimming classes at a local pool? That’s not the case anymore. That’s because parents today approach swimming with the attitude that this is something that kids need to be taught and can’t just learn on their own.

This reflects a general trend towards increasing safety awareness among parents. Parents today would never let their kids ride in the back of a pickup truck or even ride in the car without a seatbelt even though these are things that many of us did as kids. Swimming lessons are just another example of how society has educated parents to take better care of their kids than they may have done in days past.

People pursuing higher education today have so many options. We are bombarded with advertisements for colleges, universities, online distance learning centers and institutes offering higher learning coursework and programs. With the precision of a military general, my grandmother went to the grocery daily to purchase fresh ingredients to cook for her family. Now that I am a chef, I can cook for her and she can enjoy my creations.
