Have Your Employees Hang Their Diplomas

June 21st, 2009 by Best

As an office manager, one of the things that you should do is to encourage your employees to hang their college diplomas on the wall. There are some professions where this is common (like with doctors) but all different types of businesses can benefit from engaging in this practice.

When customers see that there are university diploma frames hanging on the wall, they automatically feel like the people they are working with are experts in their field. It doesn’t even really matter what the diploma is for. It could be simply for a certificate program instead of an actual college degree. It just matters that your employees are showing off the fact that they received an education in the subject they’re now working in.

Having employees hang their diplomas is also good for the employees. It makes them feel proud of their accomplishments. It reminds them that they have worked hard to get to where they are today. This can boost the sense of morale in the office. These benefits will benefit the business as a whole. Of course, you shouldn’t require that employees do this. It should be their choice. But it’s worth it to strongly suggest that diplomas be hung up.

Becoming LEED accredited in San Francisco

June 17th, 2009 by bestCs

Recently a good friend of mine, and fellow contractor decided he was going to take his business and career by the horns and become leed accredited. He has felt for a long time that becoming a more environmentally conscious builder was something that was appealing so he began the process of looking into what the accreditation might require.

His biggest concerns had to do with whether or not he could afford the courses and to take the examinations. Next he was hoping that he would have the spare time to devote to effective study. He definitely did not want to simply pay some money and get a certificate.

Instead, he looked into the Everblue Training Institute. He overheard some one at a recent contractors day convention talking about them and all they offer. And since we are just a couple of hours north of San Francisco, he figured it might be an easy enough commitment to heading down to The City a couple of times a week. In fact, if I remember correctly, he had a close cousin living in the Bay Area so he could stay there if necessary.

All that is left now is to sign up and start studying. I must admit, in fact, that I’m a bit jealous and may have to ride down and take classes with him.

Prevention in Audiology

May 21st, 2009 by Best

hearingI am a firm believer in the idea that prevention is always better than treatment. I believe that this applies to all different types of problems but of course it’s most obvious in the world of medicine. Good doctors in all areas of medicine will work towards prevention of the problems that they are most frequently asked to teach.

I’m happy to say that many medical schools are now emphasizing this. I know someone who recently attended the Doctor of Audiology Program at atsu and she says that they’re working on prevention in the field of audiology. This is interesting because this has traditionally been a field that focused on treatment.

Audiology, as you probably know, deals with hearing loss. Up until recently, advances made in this field were designed to improve treatment to assist those in dealing with hearing loss to live fuller lives. Now the field is focusing more on prevention of hearing loss so that people can continue to hear well long into their later years of life.

It excites me to see fields like this adopting an attitude of prevention. I believe that being proactive in our lives and our careers allows us to make things better for the people who come after us. And I think it’s important to leave things better for future generations.

The March of Time

May 14th, 2009 by bCar

Today is my dad’s birthday, and I’ve been reflecting on what it means to me that he is getting older.  He was always older than my friends’ dads, because he was 36 when I was born, and now thee age is showing more than I’d like.

For instance, my dad has gained weight steadily throughout the last decade or so, and although his cholesterol is sky-high he refuses to take anything for it.  My mom has recently switched to a vegetarian diet, and I think that influences his health in a positive way, but he still ought to eat better and exercise more than he does now.

I wonder what will happen to my parents when they get older.  They strike me as too cheap to ever pay for home care or a nursing home if they are able to make that decision, and I’d hate to see them in a state facility.  I’m not sure if I’m up to taking care of them at home, either, though.  I would have to get some family caregiver training because otherwise I don’t think I would know what I was doing — working in child care may be similar in some ways, but it’s still a far cry from taking care of an aging adult!

Swimming Classes Reflect Parenting Styles Today

April 24th, 2009 by Best

Think back to when you first learned how to swim. Were you taught by someone how to do it? Did you take swimming classes at a local pool? Most likely, you were actually just allowed near a pool or some other body of water and given the chance to learn how to swim on your own. In some cases, a parent might even have thrown you in the water to teach you how to swim!

That’s not the case anymore. Do a quick search for swimming classes in Miami and you will see that there are dozens of swimming schools in Miami that are offering hundreds of Miami swimming lessons this summer. That’s because parents today approach swimming with the attitude that this is something that kids need to be taught and can’t just learn on their own.

This reflects a general trend towards increasing safety awareness among parents. Parents today would never let their kids ride in the back of a pickup truck or even ride in the car without a seatbelt even though these are things that many of us did as kids. Swimming lessons are just another example of how society has educated parents to take better care of their kids than they may have done in days past.
